Richard Nixon received the nickname "Tricky Dick" during his 1950 campaign for the Senate against Helen Gahagan Douglas, a New Deal Democrat. When Nixon accused Douglas of communist subversion, calling her the "pink lady," Douglas responded by dubbing Nixon "Tricky Dick" in honor of the questionable ethics of his campaign tactics.
